The environment and air are often get affected by the conversion of energy from one form to another form. Since 1700 the(e mankind is enjoying the facilities provided by burning of fossil fuel as coal, oil and natural gas. The facilities that man comes across in daily life are electricity (major one), transportation and industrial development. But on the other hand man is also having some side effect too. The environment is getting abused from the soil on which we farm to the air which we breathe and the water that we drink. The environment is continuously paying a heavy toll for it. During the combustion process pollutants are produced which are responsible for global warming, acid rain, smog and climate change. |
The environment pollution is continuously threatening the human life, wild life and vegetation. air pollution is causing various health problems like Asthma and Cancer. It is being reported that about 6,000 people in United State die each year because of lung and heart diseases caused by Air pollution.
During the combustion process of coal, oil, natural gas and wood in electric power plant, engines of the vehicles, furnaces and even fire place various elements and compounds such as benzene and formaldehyde are produced. To oxygenate the fuel in winter season and to increase the octane number of fuel some time various compounds are added like MTBE. The biggest source of air pollution is the smoke produced by the motor vehicle. The Pollution created by motor vehicle contains hydrocarbon (HC), Nitrogen oxide (NO) And Carbon monoxide (CO). Most of the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emission consists of Hydro carbon (HC). During refueling or spillage during spit back or by evaporation of the gas from the faulty cap of the fuel tank HC or VOC are emitted to the air. The domestic cleaning product, solvents and the propellants which normally contain benzene, butane and other HC are the great source of HC emission.
SMOG
It is made up of ground level ozone. It also contains some traces of carbon monoxide, particulate matter such as dust and soot, volatile organic compound as benzene and toluene and other hydrocarbon.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
You must have been wondered when getting inside to the car your body feels greater temperature inside the car than the temperature outside the car. The normal used glasses in car allow 90 percent of the radiation to pass. Since the glass is opaque it also gives a way to longer wavelength infrared radiation. This happens because the glass of the car window allows the radiation of the sun to enter into the car and does not allow the infrared radiation to go outside the car. When the energy is trap inside the car the interior temperature of the car gets increased. This heating effect is called as Green house Effect.
Our Earth experienced Green house effect. Carbon dioxide, water vapor and some amount of other gases such as methane and nitrogen gas act like green house gases. Surface of the earth gets warm up during the day because of the absorption of solar energy. The surface of the earth tends to cool down at night by emitting some infra red radiation. But the green house gases which behave like blanket does not allow the infra red radiation to pass away. This keeps surface of the earth warm all the night.
